With Spring in full swing this week we thought we should address the elephant in the room, the nemesis of fresh flowers - heat! We have collated a few of our best tips for keeping your flowers looking beautiful all through our warm Spring and Summer on the Sunshine Coast.
Trim the flower stems
Cut each stem every 2-3 days to maximise water absorption. Use sharp scissors or a knife to cut the bottom 2cm off. Cutting on a 45 degree angle is the gold standard if your tools are sharp enough, but any clean cut will help be great!
Change the vase water
Humidity accelerates bacterial growth. Change the vase water every 2-3 days to keep your flowers fresher for longer. Always rinse the vase before adding fresh, cool water.
Use flower preservative (or a DIY alternative)
We include flower food with our bouquet deliveries - it’s specially made to reduce bacteria and nourish your blooms. But after you've used the complementary sachet, you can make a DIY solution at home using the recipe in our blog article: Why flower food is important
Keep flowers cool and away from direct sun
Queensland heat is intense - avoid placing flowers near windows, or warm areas of the kitchen. You should also avoid placing your flowers too close to fans or air-con vents as this can dry out the flowers. Choose a cool, shaded spot in your home, especially during heatwaves.
Remove dead or wilting blooms
In humid weather, petals decay faster. Remove wilted flowers and leaves promptly to slow down bacterial growth.
